Understanding how student‐constructed stop‐motion animations promote mechanistic reasoning: A theoretical framework and empirical evidence

چکیده
Previous studies have documented the promising results from student-constructed representations, including stop-motion animation (SMA), in supporting mechanistic reasoning (MR), which is considered an essential thinking skill science education. Our current study presents theoretically and empirically how SMA contributes to promoting MR. As a theoretical perspective, we propose framework hypothesizing link between elements of MR construction nature SMA, that is, chunking sequencing. We then examined extent this was consistent with multiple-case domain static electricity involving five secondary school students constructing using their own creation for reasoning. In addition, students' pre- postconstruction examined. empirical findings confirmed our by showing all identified basic MR, entities activities entities, when engaging Chunking played role facilitating identify responsible electrostatic phenomena, sequencing seemed elicit specify these entities. The analysis found student-generated has potential effect on retention use Implications instruction support are discussed.

How Causal Reasoning Can Bias Empirical Evidence
Theories of causal reasoning and learning often implicitly assume that the structural implications of causal models and empirical evidence are consistent. However, for probabilistic causal relations this may not be the case. We propose a causal consistency hypothesis claiming that people tend to create consistency between the two types of knowledge. Mismatches between structural implications an...
متن کاملThe growth of business firms: theoretical framework and empirical evidence.
We introduce a model of proportional growth to explain the distribution P(g)(g) of business-firm growth rates. The model predicts that P(g)(g) is exponential in the central part and depicts an asymptotic power-law behavior in the tails with an exponent zeta = 3. Because of data limitations, previous studies in this field have been focusing exclusively on the Laplace shape of the body of the dis...
متن کاملChoosing appropriate theories for understanding hospital reporting of adverse drug events, a theoretical domains framework approach
Adverse drug events (ADEs) may cause serious injuries including death. Spontaneous reporting of ADEs plays a great role in detection and prevention of them, however, underreporting always exists. Although several interventions have been utilized to solve this problem, they are mainly based on experience and the rationale for choosing them has no theoretical base. The vast variety of behavioral ...

متن کاملGrounding desire and motivated behavior : A theoretical framework and review of empirical evidence
Experiencing and dealing with desire is a central part of human existence. Whether it is for food, drink, sex, fame, social connectedness, or world peace, our desires shape and energize much of our daily life. A large literature, especially in social and health psychology, has focused on the ways in which desires affect our cognition and behavior. Similarly, many studies have outlined ways of h...
